Pubic Lice (Crabs) – Symptoms and Causes
Overview
Pubic lice, often called “crabs” due to their crab-like appearance, are small parasitic insects that live primarily in the genital region. These tiny parasites measure about 1/16 inch (1.6 millimeters) or smaller and differ from head lice and body lice.
They survive by feeding on human blood and laying eggs in pubic hair.
Sexual contact is the primary transmission method for pubic lice. However, they can also spread through infested bedding, towels, or clothing. When found in children’s eyebrows or eyelashes, it may indicate potential sexual abuse.
The most common symptom of pubic lice infestation is intense itching in the affected area. Other symptoms may include blue spots on the skin or small spots of blood in underwear caused by bites.
Diagnosis involves a physical examination of the pubic hair to detect lice or their eggs. Treatment usually involves over-the-counter creams, lotions, or medicated shampoos designed to eliminate both adult lice and their eggs.
Proper treatment is crucial to prevent continued infestation and spreading to others.
After treatment, itโs important to wash all potentially infested bedding, towels, and clothing. Additionally, avoiding sexual contact until the infestation is completely resolved helps prevent further transmission.
